This programme examines the impact of the international community's target of Education for All by 2015, pledged in 2000. Halfway to the target date, it examines how physical and cultural barriers are being overcome to deliver education in the most remote and poorest communities in the world. Children of nomads in the Himalayas, young cattle raiders in Uganda, and girls in Senegal who are forced to work rather than learn, are visited to see if their situation has improved. We follow a conference to discover what the international community intends to do next for the 72 million children out of school and 744 million illiterate adults, and whether there is enough political will and sufficient development funds to back them up.
